Raising Your Emotional Intelligence

Last week I chose to explore the subject of emotional intelligence. This is a follow-up on something I was working on that relates to mental health. This subject is becoming more critical especially during these difficult times of the pandemic. There was no better way of covering this subject other than reading a book from one of the luminaries on emotional intelligence and this is none other than Jeanne Segal. Jeanne is a pioneer in the field of emotional intelligence and the psychology of connection. In her book, Raising Your Emotional Intelligence, she provides an engaging and practical approach on how to develop new ways of thinking, feeling and acting, in order to make life-altering changes.

The book is full of easy to follow quizzes and challenges which are integral in the learning journey; They are ideal warmups for getting in touch with how one feels. The book also extends to talk about the body and mind connection. The emphasis is placed on becoming attuned to the messages that our bodies deliver and ensuring that our bodies are not suppressed by our feelings. Simple tasks like breathing and exercises can be used to rejuvenate our body parts.  This is well articulated including how we can do it for a brighter focus in our work. The techniques in this book will also help us to identify and release some deeply held feelings of abandonment and sadness and this will bring some joy in our lives.

An interesting perspective of this book is that the tools provided are tested through research and have has some legitimacy. I am actually engaging in developing some of the habits and techniques suggested in the book and so far, I can already see transformation. This is a must-read book especially during this season when our emotional intelligence is required to be at the peak.

It is evident from the book that attaining emotional intelligence will require practice and patience. Indeed, a practice to perceive the physical element of emotions and inner experiences is not a magic and will clearly require lots of practice to get to the epic levels. Please note that the book is a practical guide and one of the books you will require to revisit once in a while to refresh your tool kit and to guarantee results in improving our emotional intelligence.

The book also teaches us how to listen to our intuition and our body languages and has put in place signals that are part of our decision-making process, and thus help in the realization of the full benefit of our emotional resources.
