This week I decided to pick a spiritual book “Our Lives in His Hands: An Ordinary Couple’s Path to Holiness” which I recommend to every couple as a must-read if happiness is one of their priorities.
Set in a picturesque Spanish countryside, this book is about Tomas Alvira and his wife Paquita. Written by Olga Marlin, the story follows the young couple’s love life, from when they first meet through marriage to their departure from the world stage. The author seeks to illuminate the virtues of marriage life along with the sacrifices and shared values that make it stand the test of time.
In this book, the characters’ marriage comes 13 years after their first meeting, having endured painful separations in the intervening period of Spanish civil war and religious persecution raged in Spain.
They finally settle down against all odds, surviving the Second World War and going ahead to raise a large family of nine children. All this while, they each hold down successful jobs. The Alviras are portrayed as the epitome of happiness and fulfilment that can possibly come from a “bright and cheerful home” “where work and family were closely intertwined” while harmony, love and godliness take centre-stage.
The book contains many lessons that couples can take away to make their home bright and cheerful. These lessons are not out of the ordinary, they goes to the basics and things that we normally take for granted.
The book provides a picture of the endearing and enduring courtship and how one can overcome the challenges. It provides us with practical dimensions of lovely marriage and effective parenting. Tomas and Paquita also provide us with ways we can make exemplary careers and be able to make long lasting impacts to communities. It is about an ordinary couple doing extraordinary things.
The book will definitely inspire us to be more at home, at work and for our communities .
