What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: And Two Other Short Guides to Achieving More at Work and at Home

The Founder of Inspire Leadership & focuses on unlocking people’s potential by providing them with programs; mentorship and coaching into high performance

By: Laura Vanderkam

This book is a pep talk about how you can create time in the early morning hours to do things for yourself. The book gives brief examples of extremely successful titans and how they have used their mornings. It explains why using the morning hours is beneficial. The book provides a list of things you could do with your morning hours. In short Laura is breaking down the basics and benefits and  provides real life examples of how successful people start their day. The use of titans or people who have made it makes it more exciting and motivating to understand their mindset and how they use this time each day. The results are happiness and success.

Laura makes it clear how to use a time log to keep track of how we spend our time; Why early nights and early starts will make us more productive; And how to apply our new time-management skills to other areas of our lives. In other words, proper time management will not just make our mornings less hectic and keep our stress levels down, it will also boost our productivity in the office and help us get the most out of our days. The key is learning how to keep track of time. Once we know where all that time goes, we can start making plans to use our hours more efficiently. And that is great for our career and our personal life.

Key takeaways for me are:

  1. Repetition  is key and it takes time but results to better mornings.
  2. Make priorities and work on them for 90 minutes each day.
  3. Switch from choices to habits. Habits and routines is what will make us successful.
  4. Find things that fit mornings well. Make sure you choose the right things to build more positive energy.

Tips on how to make changes to our mornings:

  1. We need to track how we spend our time using a journal. We will not fix our time if we do not know how we are spending it.
  2. We need to visualize perfect mornings. What is it that we want to make happen in the morning? Have a picture in your mind about how that will look like.
  3. We need to consider the transitions and the logistics for a better morning. We will need to break things down to their smallest parts until we get something solvable.
  4. We need to build morning habit and routines. “This is the most important step,” says Vanderkam. We will need to monitor our energy and place the best routine at the right times.
  5. Flexibility will be key, and we should factor it in our mornings.
