By: Paul Arden

This is a handbook on how to succeed in the world. It is a very easy-to-read book full of nuggets of wisdom for all of us irrespective of what our situations are at the moment. The book was written by a marketing and advertising guru hence it is very positive and illustrative. Paul Arden was an advertisement guru renowned for the slogan ‘The Car in front is always a Toyota'. He offered up his wisdom on issues as diverse as problem-solving, communication, how we can play our cards right, making mistakes, and creativity. All the notions can be applied to aspects of modern life.

The three key valuable lessons I learned from this book were:

  1. Being ambitious is key: This is in line with my preaching of having Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs). Once you have your dreams in place, the next step is to have a plan of a working formula. The working formula calls for the right mix of talent and ambition. Talent alone cannot get you far unless it is complemented with action and ambition.
  2. Working towards your goals: We need to set targets based on our BHAGs. As we set the goals, we need to be conscious about how we can be accountable, open-minded, and positive towards those same goals. We need to have an accountability mechanism that may include having a trusted friend who holds us to standard and ensures we are not slacking off. A mastermind group will be of the essence for this to come to fruition. You can achieve this by having a team of able and honest people around you, being positive in every situation is not an easy fete but it is something we can work on as everyone needs it to be successful. Remember a power plant does not have energy, it generates energy. We can also generate positivity in our lives. Finally, there is a call to be open-minded and be able to share our ideas and dreams - you never know who the universe will send to help us to work on our dreams.

  3. Being prepared to fail: For us to succeed, we need to keep pushing despite the failures. Anybody who ever made it to the top has some stories of past failures to share. Ours is just to learn from those failures and make lessons that should help us progress. The famous proverb “Fall seven times, stand up eight” becomes relevant.

In the end, It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be.
