The Founder of Inspire Leadership & focuses on unlocking people’s potential by providing them with programs; mentorship and coaching into high performance
There is a lot going on during this period that we are working from home and this has made multitasking quite a challenge: work, homeschooling of children, taking care of the basics at home as well as managing the crises has not been easy. This has resulted to a lot of distractions, which if not managed will steal our productivity. To manage this, I decided to look for a book that can make me focus and help me sharpen my focusing skills. I then came across this book Hyperfocus: How to Work Less to Achieve More by Chris Bailey. It is about working less to achieve more. What a blessing. The book is helping me put into perspective how to concentrate more deeply, think more clearly and get more done. This is a must read for people bothered about their productivity and aiming to double the same especially during this pandemic. Their dreams will come true once they read this book.
It is indeed a practical guide to help you manage your attention. Chris is very clear that your attention to issues is the most powerful resource you have and that will help you to become more creative, get things done and even live a more meaningful life. The book also helped me to identify, understand and deal with the four major types of distraction and interruption in our lives.
The book lays out for us the need to establish a clear physical and mental environment that we work in and emphasize that this is key. In fact, one of the biggest challenges that we are facing at the moment is lack of physical space to work from which significantly reduces our productivity.
Controlling our motivations and making sure we are not overdoing things is also critical. For instance, I have found myself doing more of one thing or another at the expense of other important things. Chris provides us with a road map on how to remain motivated on the important issues and how to achieve our objectives by working for fewer hours to become more productive. Time out is a key element of Hyperfocus where we need those pit stops which are intentional. On multitasking, he preaches the gospel of making it more strategic and learning when to pay attention and when to let our mind wander wherever it wants to.
Another interesting thing I got from this book includes the fact that working fewer hours can increase our productivity and especially when we strategically plan. I have come to learn that more matters, meaning and slogging more hours leads to be better results. Coffee is my drug and the book educated me that drinking caffeine strategically instead of habitually will give me more energy.
