The WHY Behind Your Goals

Nov 03, 2020

The best goals start with WHY. Why am I doing this? What do I intend to achieve in the end? At the beginning of the year, we all had goals and targets, but you find that a time comes and we have not achieved them. We have forgotten the goals which are now a guilty reminder of everything we haven’t made time for. And that is just it; We do not know why we set the goals in the first place.

As a leadership coach, I would recommend that all your goals start with WHY. Why do you want to scale your career? Why do you want to learn a new skill? Why do you want to live a healthier lifestyle? Why do you want to start a business?

The fact that you are here reading this means that you have a set of goals you want to achieve right? Or you have decided to take it more seriously and that’s great!

Now, there is nothing wrong with setting a goal but it is likely to be a dispassionate goal and you know you cannot achieve goals you aren’t truly invested and excited about.

That is why it is important to understand the WHY behind your goals and why the goal matters. Starting your career journey without a strong why reduces your chances of achieving your goals. You did not start your journey with the correct thought process and a clear tangible target in mind.

In his book Start with Why, Simon Sinek shares the ideology of why why matters. He says that very few people and companies can clearly understand why they do what they do. He teaches that why is all about our purpose; why does your organization exist? Why do you wake up early in the morning? There must be a reason for doing everything.

Setting goals is easy, but getting to the "why" behind our goals has always been a bit difficult. It is a goal-setting process that people usually overlook possibly because it involves a bit of investigation.

Nevertheless, whether we like it or not, we have to clearly know why we want to achieve a specific goal. It will help us stir the energy we need to keep going. If you cannot figure out more than two reasons why you want to achieve a particular goal, put it aside and think about the whys you cannot answer.
