Mental health awareness during Covid-19 pandemic

May 22, 2020

2020 has not had the flow that most of us anticipated. The Covid-19 pandemic has left most people in the world shaken, full of anxiety and depression. None expected things would take the turn they have. The whole world is in distress. No one has been left out and all of this is becoming a mouthful to digest at once. This, therefore, leads most of us to experience traumatic episodes. The government cannot risk allowing people to continue behaving normally. This means that controlling the pandemic will be very hard. It is vital that we all acknowledge the seriousness so that we do not have a hard time coping with it.

Adapting to the new normal of how we are supposed to socialize with one another, keeping our distance and even staying at home is obviously increasing the pressure and this definitely leads to anxiety. So many people have lost their loved ones and the worst thing is that they are not given the chance to give them a decent send-off because of how threatening this disease is. This can be traumatic and the family members are advised not to shy off from seeking counseling.

People have also lost their jobs. This is the main reason that so many people are stressed. The reason being they do not know how they are going to survive and provide for their families. The stringent measures that are being used to curb this disease are the ones that make it hard. However, it is unfortunate because we do not have any other means and at the end of the day our survival is vital and key. This is the time that we should become creative, use our talents to survive, and keep ourselves busy being productive. We all have to play our roles to ensure we survive and also save ourselves from stressful thoughts. This happens when we are idle.

Our frontline soldiers who are our nurses and doctors are having the most difficult time adjusting to the Covid-19 pandemic. They work day and night to ensure that the numbers do not escalate and try to manage those who are already sick. These doctors and nurses can also get depressed. Most importantly we must remember that they are parents, wives, husbands and someone’s children. They risked everything just to serve their country.  We have to offer our moral support to them and most importantly stay at home to ease their jobs and also for our own safety.

Be your brother’s keeper during this period. Help where you can, donate to those who lack because the only way that we are going to come out of this pandemic victorious is if we look out after each other. Remember, this is the period to think as “we” and not as “me”. Be there for one another.

During this pandemic, let us also not forget to take care of our mental health. Do not suffer in silence. Make sure you get the necessary help. If you are going through any kind of violence, the rule of law is still functioning. Report any cases of violence to the necessary authorities. Avoid false information that will cause panic and only rely on authorized information from verified sites. Most importantly wash your hands or use sanitizer, keep your distance and stay at home.

The government cannot risk allowing people to continue behaving normally. This means that controlling the pandemic will be very hard. It is vital that we all acknowledge the seriousness so that we do not have a hard time coping with it.
